Keep your USDOT number active and audit-ready.
We handle the paperwork behind your fleet's federal compliance — biennial MCS-150 updates, filing deadline tracking, and record corrections — so a missed form never takes your trucks off the road.
What the MCS-150 actually is
The MCS-150, the Motor Carrier Identification Report, is how the FMCSA keeps its record of your fleet current — your business details, fleet size, mileage, and operating classification. It isn't a one-time form.
Who has to file
Any company operating commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce under a USDOT number generally has to file — for-hire carriers, private carriers, owner-operators, and carriers hauling freight, passengers, or hazardous materials.
Why it matters
The FMCSA uses this data to maintain federal safety records and calculate carrier safety scores. Outdated or missed filings don't just sit quietly on a form — they carry real operational and financial consequences.
What the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) is
The UCR is a separate federal program from the MCS-150. Instead of updating your record, it's an annual fee-based registration that funds state-level truck safety enforcement — and it catches carriers who assume their MCS-150 filing covers everything.
Who has to register
The UCR net is wider than the MCS-150. Any for-hire or private motor carrier operating in interstate or international commerce has to register — but so do brokers, freight forwarders, and leasing companies, even if they never touch a truck.
What it costs
The MCS-150 is a free, biennial update to your FMCSA record — it tells the government who you are and what you run. The UCR is a paid, annual registration that funds state highway enforcement — it's checked at roadside. Filing one does not satisfy the other.
Your deadline is staggered, not seasonal
FMCSA spreads filings across the year so it isn't processing every carrier at once. The last digit of your USDOT number sets your month; the digit before it sets whether you file in an odd or even year. We track the actual date against your number so nothing slips by.

A compliance documentation company, not a government office
Fleet Filing Co. is a private compliance documentation company. We prepare, review, and file the recurring federal paperwork that transportation companies are required to keep current — starting with the MCS-150 biennial update — so carriers can focus on running freight instead of tracking form deadlines.
We work with owner-operators, private carriers, and multi-truck fleets to prepare accurate filings ahead of their assigned deadline, and to correct records that have fallen out of date.
Independent service disclosure: Fleet Filing Co. is a private company and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or in any way officially connected with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the U.S. Department of Transportation, or any other government agency. Filing directly with the FMCSA through its official portal is always free. We charge only for our document preparation and filing service, not for the underlying government filing itself.
